Cockatoo in the wattle tree

Lately we've had cockatoos in the garden. This one was enjoying the seed pods from the wattle tree. They are destructive beasts and leave their dinner mess for others to clean up!

Sorry the pic is a bit out of focus, but i had to snap it in a hurry, from a fair distance.

Rainbow lorikeets - backyard visitors

For the past few weeks, rainbow lorikeets have been frequent backyard visitors, along with a whole host of other birds.

These busy, chattery little birds are pretty adept at bullying - both other birds and their own kind. They love feeding on the foliage and blossoms of native shrubs and trees, and will raid ripe fruit.

King Parrot checking the coast is clear

This King Parrot visitor to our backyard was checking the scene below to make sure that the search for the seeds on the ground wouldn't mean being shooed away by the bullying lorikeets!

King Parrots

I have never noticed the blue feathers at the top of the tail before.

These Australian King Parrots come to peck around in my backyard. We put out some native bird seed, but they also arrive after we do some pruning - looking for grubs and worms.

These are all females, with green upper breasts and heads. Males are scarlet. They get about in parties and small flocks, mainly green.

They are often in company with Crimson Rosellas, which are more timid and fly away more readily.

Eurobodalla National Park at North Congo

A long walk along the beach and the northern bank of the Congo River. We were delighted to come across a "bird flying school", which we observed from afar. The adult birds were teaching the fledglings how to fly. They would take off and circle, demonstrating what they wanted the young birds to do, and then nudge the youngsters into having a go.

Some Birds

Sooty Oystercatcher
South Rosedale
These birds with the striking red bill are found around Australian coasts, usually no more than 50 m from the ocean. They are vulnerable to habitat destruction. They feed on molluscs, crustaceans, marine worms, starfish, sea urchins, small fish, and drink sea water.

I saw this bird between about 6:40 and 6:45 am on 29 Dec 2008.

Cormorant
Boatshed Beach
I have no idea what type of cormorant this was, drying its wings on the rocks off the headland at the northern end of Boatshed Beach around 2:40 pm on 9 January 2009.

King Parrot
Often seen in small groups, and sometimes with rosella, these King Parrots were in a small tree near the house. We get lots of great birds around the house, including the magpies and kookooburras I have shown before.

Merry Merry King of the yard is he--ee
Laugh! Kookaburra, laugh!
Kookaburra gay your life must be.

He let me get closer and closer, checked me out, and stayed stock still.

Far nicer to know than the rats in the roof we have been battling this week. They come out to play in the evening, and party all night. Hopefully the poison has got them.

Magpies
12 April 2007

These magpies, with young ones, came to pay a visit on 28 December 2006
I wonder if they were the same birds who visited at Easter? :
