The fire burnt the reserve at the back of our house, and our back yard and those of our neighbours. We were very fortunate that it stopped at the house. This fire was not one of flames crossing the road, but embers thrown forward from the fire front. One thing which saved us was a wind shift at a critical time. It was travelling from the northwest towards us, and then the wind shifted to the south.
There was a small amount of rain (only a couple of millimetres) which helped make the grass sprout almost immediately.

The fire exposed the road behind us, which we could barely see before.

Behind the metal slats is steel mesh; it helped prevent embers reaching the underfloor. Requirement for modern builds. |
